Alpha Thalassaemia Trait

Like Beta Thalassaemia Trait you can inherit Alpha Plus Thalassaemia or Alpha Zero Thalassaemia Trait from one of your parents. These are both harmless and carriers may be mildly anaemic. However, it is important to find out whether your partner also carries either Alpha Plus Thalassaemia Trait or Alpha Zero Thalassaemia Trait before you start a family as you could have a child with a Haemoglobin Disorder.

Alpha Zero Thalassaemia is common among common among people from South East Asia including China, Hong Kong and Singapore as well as the Mediterranean. Alpha Zero Thalassaemia is particularly important because if both you and your partner carry it your child could have serious inherited anaemia called "Bart's Hydrops Fetalis". The Risk is small but it is important to know about it so that it can be avoided.
