Beta Thalassaemia Trait

This is a mild form of anaemia and most people who carry Beta Thalassaemia Trait do not even know they have it. They have smaller red blood cells than usual but more of them. This does not matter.

Carrying Beta Thalassaemia Trait is sometimes mistaken for Iron Deficiency Anaemia and not Hereditary Anaemia therefore iron tablets may be prescribed. Thalassaemia carriers should not take iron tablets unless they have a special blood test to accurately check their iron levels. This test would check the ferritin levels and if necessary iron tablets would be prescribed.

If you are a carrier of Beta Thalassaemia Trait and your partner does not carry any blood disorder then there is no particular risk to your child. Your child can only be a healthy carrier of the trait.

If both you and your partner have Beta Thalassaemia Trait then there is a 25% chance that you could have a child with Beta Thalassaemia Major (see diagram). A child with Beta Thalassaemia Major suffers from severe anaemia, which can be life threatening. Their treatment is life long.

Quick fact

If you are a trait and your partner is NOT, then there is no risk to your children. However, your children could inherit Thalassaemia trait in the same way as you did from your parent.
