What is Thalassaemia Trait?

Thalassaemia Trait is like Sickle Cell inherited from one parent who also carries Thalassaemia Trait. A person who has Thalassaemia Trait does not have an illness and like Sickle Cell Trait Thalassaemia Trait will not develop into the disorder. If you have Thlassaemia Trait you are usually a healthy person and will only know you carry Thalassaemia Trait if you have a blood test carried out.

If someone carries Thalassaemia Trait they will have some slightly smaller and paler red blood cells than someone who has normal blood cells, reduced Haemoglobin levels in the blood means less oxygen to give the red blood cells their colour. These people make more red blood cells than someone who has Hb AA and the production of more red blood cells still enables the body organs to function properly.

There are two types of Thalassaemia , Alpha Thalassaemia and Beta Thalassaemia.

Quick fact

Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Support Project offers free counselling on Thalassaemia in different community languages.
