Information for parents

It is very important that parents build the self-esteem of children and teenagers who have Sickle Cell Disorder or Thalassaemia Major. Parents like teachers need to listen to and discuss any concerns or issues with the child and encourage them continuously. Like any teenager a child with Sickle Cell Disorder or Thalassaemia Major needs praise, encouragement and support.

There are times a child /teenager who has either of the conditions may feel they look slightly different to their peers, some may look younger as they mature later because of the condition. Re-assure these children that their bodies will mature in time though this may take a little longer than their counterparts. Many may feel conscious about any surgery they may have had as it may have left them with scars. Focus on a child's positive points and strengths in order to help them feel good, distracting them from the negative way they may feel about themselves.

Teenagers with the condition will possibly approach parents to talk about sex and relationships. Advise them as you would any other teenager to practice safe sex and that if he or she has Sickle Cell Disorder then they are more prone to infections and therefore should be made aware of the risks of sexually transmitted diseases. Emphasise that if he or she is a carrier of Sickle Cell or Thalassaemia Trait, or the disorder, then to make sure their partner is tested in the future when they plan to marry
