What is beta-thalassaemia?

Most people who are beta thalassaemia carriers do not know that they have it and they have smaller red blood cells than usual.

The fact that beta thalassaemia carriers have smaller red blood cells does not matter. However, this is sometimes mistaken for iron deficiency anaemia, and iron is prescribed. Thalassaemia carriers should not take iron tablets unless they need to.

Quick fact

If you are a trait and your partner is NOT, then there is no risk to your children. However, your children could inherit Thalassaemia trait in the same way as you did from your parent.
