Whats happening in wolverhampton?

The West Midlands is in the first wave of the national roll out for universal screening programmes.

As Wolverhampton has a high proportion of black and minority ethnic communities, we were amongst the first to implement the new national programme. The ethnic prevalence within the Antenatal population of Wolverhampton is 28.5 % and 35.5% within the Neonatal population based on figures produced to date

Neonatal Screening

From December 2003, parents of all babies born in Wolverhampton have been offered the opportunity to have their child tested for Sickle Cell disorders and offered information before and subsequent to screening. Neonatal screening can detect babies with Sickle Cell and enable early diagnosis and treatment in infancy. Care might include long-term antibiotics, information, counseling and on going support.

Antenatal Screening

Wolverhampton implemented the antenatal screening programme in April 2004. All pregnant women (and partners) are offered the opportunity to be screened for Sickle Cell or Thalassaemia, and this will enable prenatal diagnosis and parental choice about termination and identification of carriers.

Informed choice

It is envisaged that by improving the overall quality and co-ordination of screening programmes that women will be offered better information and support to enable them to make informed choices about their pregnancy and the right and appropriate choices for their children.

Quick fact

As well as the Asians thalassaemia also effects people from mediterranean, Middle Eastern and African Caribbean descent.
